How To Style An Entryway Table

It can be a little overwhelming for anyone to start a decorating project. The main question that probably comes to mind is “where do I begin?”. A console table can be the first thing you see when walking into your home, so you’ll want to make a statement with a look you’ll love! It’s actually more simple than you’d think to decorate and I’ll share some simple tips to teach you how to bring your console table from lackluster to welcoming. So let’s get right into it!

Find The Right Table

Finding the right table for your entryway is probably the hardest part about the whole process! If you’re like me, it could take months, before you find one you like and want to commit to. Personally I took a long time before buying one I loved because I didn’t want to settle. I wanted a piece that was affordable as well as beautiful and sturdy. Some things to consider when buying an entryway table include the size; you’ll want to make sure you find one that isn’t too large or too small for your space. Typically most entryway tables are around 30-35” high. This is important to remember because a too tall or short table will look funny. And this is your guests first impression of your home so size is important.

Function

You’ll also need to consider the function of your table. Do you want drawers to easily tuck things away like a dog leash, or other personal belongings you don’t want sitting out? What about shelves, for extra decorating space, which some may not prefer and want a cleaner look. Once you decide the style of your table, it’s time to start decorating!

Add A Statement Piece

Adding a statement piece, or anchor, such as oversized art, or a unique decorative object draws the eye towards your table. Although as you’ll see with my design, it’s not always necessary. Since I have the stairs above my table, I chose not to use a large statement piece so as not to overwhelm the space. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to decorate, it is what you love that works best for your home!

Layer

Once you get your statement piece it’s time to start layering. Starting with books, or even boxes, baskets, and trays. Books are great for stacking pieces for extra dimension as well as providing a different texture. Baskets can hold your mail, shoes, toys, or any other odds and ends around your home. Same with trays, they are perfect for setting your keys in at the end of your day. Layering different textures is also a great way to give more depth to your design. You’ll notice I added some greenery with succulents, burlap around the tray, and incorporated galvanized metal for more texture. All the pieces work seamlessly together.

Create Height

Like I said earlier, books are great for creating height with pieces you love that maybe aren’t tall enough to begin with. You’ll see I used books to display my galvanized metal “hi” sign. As well as used gold lanterns to draw the eye up. Height keeps your eyes moving around the display as well as unifies the overall design so its important to give your design some height.

Finalize With Accents

This is always my favorite part, adding pieces that speak to your soul or have sentimental value to really make the design your own. My husband and I are homebodies so when I found the “lets stay in” sign, I knew I had to get it for our entryway. It’s a fun piece that represents us. The sign can even be reversed and reads “lets go out”. Other fun accents I chose include the house candle holder, and “today is a good day” sign. Again, there is no right or wrong way to choose items, what matters most is you include pieces you truly love in your design.
